Wedding Photography
May 29, 2005
Until recently, most commercial photographers looked down their noses at wedding photographers. But as jobs dried up, they began to notice that wedding photographers were still making money.
The tiny white specks are evidence of my camera’s flash going off during the ceremony.
After twenty years I decided to try my hand at “doing a wedding.” Through a friend-of-a-friend, I found an attractive couple getting married at a nice location. I worked my tail off, doing almost 1000 exposures, which I edited down to 100 “keepers.” Indeed, the editing is the hardest part of all, and I still haven’t even met with the couple to discuss which photos they want. In other words, this will be an epic job in terms of time spent.
But now I have a wedding portfolio and a better understanding of what it takes to do wedding photography right. And that starts with adjusting my prices to reflect the time, skill, and talent required. It sounds like a lot of money, but charging $5000 for a medium-sized wedding is my new starting price. Ouch!
